Using sports and physical activity to enhance the resilience and mental health of Transgender, Nonbinary and Gender Diverse People
Course Description This course is designed for mental health practitioners who are interested in learning how to support transgender, nonbinary and gender diverse clients in using sports and physical activity to enhance resilience and improve mental health. The course will explore the following topics: a) the benefits of physical activity and sports b) barriers to physical activity/sports participation for Trans folks c) strategies clinicians can use to support clients in incorporating physical activity or sports.
Through lecture and discussion, participants will gain insights into best practices to support clients in incorporating physical activity in accessible, empowering, non-intimidating ways. Additionally, participants will leave with some concrete strategies to help clients overcome barriers to sports participation.
Instructor Cory Nyamora, PsyD. (he/him) is a licensed psychologist and endurance sports coach. He is the founder and director of Endurance – A Sports & Psychology Center, Inc., a Center that provides endurance coaching for beginner and experienced athletes, as well as sports psychology and clinical psychology services to children, adults, couples and families. Dr. Nyamora has developed programs that have helped individuals and families find fun, accessible and non-intimidating ways to become more physically active. He also provides trainings for organizations and athletes on topics related to the intersections of sports, mental health and overall wellness.
