Winning Together: Strategies for Parents to Support High School Athletes

Description: Are you a parent of a high school athlete looking to provide the best support for your child’s athletic journey? Join us for an insightful and interactive workshop designed to equip parents with the tools, strategies, and understanding needed to positively impact your child's sports experience. We will also explore the negative and positive impact that sports can have on your child’s mental health and suggest concrete strategies to build a positive home environment and sports culture for young athletes.

Who will benefit from this training?

  1. Parents of athletes at any level (middle school, high school, college).
  2. Individuals interested in understanding how to better support young athletes in their sports journey.

Outcome Objectives: In this workshop, you will learn:

  1. Effective Communication: Techniques for fostering open and supportive dialogue with your athlete, ensuring they feel heard and understood.
  2. Balancing Support and Independence: How to strike the right balance between providing encouragement and allowing your child to develop independence and self-confidence.
  3. Managing Expectations: Strategies for setting realistic expectations and goals that align with your child’s aspirations and capabilities.
  4. Supporting Emotional Well-being: Practical advice on how to support your child’s mental and emotional health, including coping strategies for setbacks and challenges.
  5. Navigating Stress and Pressure: Insights into recognizing and mitigating the pressures faced by high school athletes, and how you can help them manage stress effectively.

Location and Time: Tuesday September 17, 2024, 7 pm – 8 pm. online (link will be sent once you register).

Fees: $50-$100 - per person Please pay what you can in this range. Higher fees will provide access to others who aren’t able to pay the full fee. If you need a lower rate please let us know.

I am a licensed clinical psychologist and running and triathlon coach. I received my Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology (Alliant International University) in 2004. I held prior coaching certifications through USA Triathlon from 2008-2020 and USA Track and Field for several years.

I provide clinical psychotherapy services, trainings and workshops, consultation and supervision for psychology, social service and foster care agencies, as well as triathlon and running coaching. I was born and raised in Kenya and immigrated to the U.S. in 1993. One of my passions is leading running trips to Kenya. I love the outdoors and especially enjoy spending time with my family as well as trail-running, swimming, cycling, racing and enjoying travel, music, art, food, culture and reading.
