Sitting and talking isn’t the only way to deal with mental health concerns
The traditional therapy model has been around for a long time. Talk therapy is a time-honored and well-researched method that helps people manage mental health concerns. It just makes sense – by talking with a trained expert, you can explore your emotions, habits, experiences, and gain new understanding about yourself.
Also, as an endurance athlete and sports coach, I know that getting active can also help improve mental health.
It can help a person feel more connected with their body (get out of their head). It can help a person set and achieve goals. It can help improve physical health, which has shown to positively impact mental health.
I am partial to endurance sports because they are approachable from any level. Running is simple – it only takes a good pair of shoes and a safe route to run.
Running can be done alone or with a group.
Running is not about winning or losing, but about accomplishing personal goals. Most of us will never win a marathon, but crossing the finish line feels like being a winner no matter how many other people crossed ahead of me.
I recommend supplementing mental health treatment with physical activity whenever it is appropriate. I have even worked with clients who wanted to go for a walk while we talk about a specific concern. While we always take care to maintain confidentiality and privacy, I have found that talking while walking can help a person understand themselves and their problems in a new way.
Let’s talk about how physical activity can help your mental well-being!
