Nurtured by Nature
I’ve been reflecting on the article Nurtured by Nature which focuses on psychological research about how time in nature improves our mental health and sharpens our cognitive skills. It’s definitely an article worth reading and it reinforces the importance of the personal and professional work we do engaging clients in sports, psychology and helping folks connect with nature. Part of the appeal of most Endurance sports is that we are outdoors, in the woods, on running trails, in forests, the ocean, lakes or rivers, and enjoying the additional endorphins released from exercise. When engaging in these sports we have the combined benefits that come from both exercise and nature.
In 2020 especially, being able to get outside to walk, run, hike, bike, swim definitely helps keep life balanced and keeps stress at bay. I hope you are taking small steps to go outside, even if it’s just sitting in your yard, on your porch or by a tree. I hope you can sit on some grass and listen to the birds, feel the breeze, observe the squirrels and the sky. With Shelter in Place and restrictions, it’s important to check beforehand to see what parks are open and what’s available close by. Neighborhood and city parks are great options to explore even with a meditative slow walk.
Here are a few of our favorite nature spots in Northern California:
1. Redwood Regional Park, Oakland
2. Point Pinole Regional Park, San Pablo
3. Wildcat Canyon Park, Richmond
4. Tilden Regional Park, Berkeley
5. American River Parkway, Sacramento
6. Montara State Beach, Montara
7. Lake Tahoe, Sierra Nevada Mountains
8. Mount Tamalpais, Mill Valley
9. Mount Diablo, Walnut Creek
10. Tuolomne Meadows in Yosemite National Park
