Moving Through Life Transitions
Change can often be hard, and yet, everybody has to do it. Liliana Moncada, LCSW, is available to help you face your life transitions. She specializes in working with new mothers, new college and high school students, and others facing major life changes - such as moving into adulthood, those facing changes in family structures, new jobs, career changes, and more.
These times in life can be exciting and scary at the same time. In her work, Ms. Moncada helps her clients to hold all of the feelings that arise with transitions – sadness, anxiety, excitement, instability, and more.
As a part of her work, Ms. Moncada believes that physical activity plays an important role in sustaining health and managing the challenges that come with life transitions.
First of all, feelings of worry or the blues can spiral into depression or anxiety. Physical activity can help release endorphins that help break out of that spiral. Exercise is grounding – helping to connect you with your physical self when your mind is occupied with worry or depression.
Second, change can make us feel unstable – it threatens the routines and structures that we’ve established to keep us comfortable. Routine provides scaffolding that supports our ability to cope with stress. Establishing a routine of exercise helps maintain a feeling of supportive structure as we cope with other changes. Maintaining a simple routine, such as yoga twice a week, or taking a walk three times a week, can help establish a new structure when old structures are changing.
Finally, physical activity can help us connect with others. Finding an activity buddy helps to maintain a new exercise routine, and it helps us connect with another person for support. A new mother can bond with her baby by sharing a walk, for example. She could also find another new mom to walk together, sharing support and conversation.
Wherever possible, Ms. Moncada recommends finding a place outside, to be physically active in a natural environment. Sunshine and fresh air are important for physical and mental health. Sunlight is a natural mood-lifter, and the natural world of trees and grass also remind us of other things that are constant in the midst of change.
